Kritici u něj vyzdvihují hebkost, jemnost a tvárnost jeho hlasu i herecké nadání. Renomé si získal díky rolím italského, francouzského, slovanského i německého repertoáru. Je pravidelně zván do předních světových operních domů, jako jsou newyorská MET, Staatsoper Unter den Linden v Berlíně, Staatsoper v Hamburku, Opéra national v Paříži, Nizozemská národní opera v Amsterdamu, Královská opera v Covent Garden v Londýně či Wiener Staatsoper. Má za sebou bohatou spolupráci se světovými orchestry, například Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Orchestr Tonhalle Curych nebo Česká filharmonie, i s předními dirigenty, ke kterým patří Daniel Barenboim, Simon Rattle, John Eliot Gardiner nebo Jakub Hrůša. V loňském roce vydal jedinečné album árií a duetů Bedřicha Smetany Smetana Arias. Jeho celoživotním mentorem a učitelem je Paolo De Napoli.
